Since restaurant novices Thad Eure Jr. and Charles Winston opened the Angus Barn in 1960, it has amassed more than 200 local and national distinctions, including induction into the Nations Restaurant News Fine Dining Hall of Fame. The classically red, curiously unceremonious, honest-to-goodness converted barn seems a highly unlikely contender for housing one of the nations top steak houses. But this local dining icon has earned its reputation and its success in the same way as many other famous establishments: Shortcuts are simply unacceptable. Beef is aged to perfection on site; the staff cooks filets as ordered; and the crab cakes are to die for. Every detail – from the basket of complimentary apples at the entrance to the walk-in humidor – focuses on indulging the customer.
Removed from the heart of Raleigh activity in an inconspicuous strip mall near RDU airport lies some of the most sought-after sushi in the state. When Waraji opened in 1997, Triangle sushi and sashimi lovers began driving from all corners to enjoy the expertly crafted, flavorsome rolls. Grab a spot at the sushi bar, where many a customer interact with the friendly chefs for suggestions or just a little Nigiri 101. An assortment of classic Japanese entrées – including tempura, teriyakis and the fondue-like shabu-shabu – are also available.
Mama Dip, aka Mildred Council, opened her Kitchen with just $64 on a November 1976 Sunday morning. Since then, vegetables have been served soft here, lemonade sipped slowly, and collard greens have reigned supreme. Today, images of the large brown house on Chapel Hills Rosemary Street can be spotted on the likes of Oprah and the Food Network, as this Triangle institution has become nationally renowned for its ability to put the "soul" into soul food. Taste the Southern goodness with every chitterling, salmon cake, or bowl of chicken and dumplings. After supper, the pecan pie and banana pudding are "mmm, mmm good."
